Is Colon Cleansing Healthy or Not? There is still some debate about whether or not colon cleansing is a healthy alternative for people and if it is effective or not as a health benefit for those who choose to use it. The people who argue in favor of colon cleansing say that toxins are removed from the body, which helps refresh the body and help the body’s immune system become charged up in fighting disease. They also say that not cleaning the colon causes a build-up in fecal matter which can harden on the walls of the colon and lead to further digestive problems. Constipation and IBS are two of the major reasons people use all-natural, herbal colon cleansing products. The idea is that as constipation increases, more fecal matter builds up on the walls of the colon causing such problems as sluggishness, blood in stool, Diverticulosis, acid reflux, heart burn, pot belly, slow digestion, and more symptoms. This, say critics, is not necessarily true. Doctors don’t recommend that you have these colon cleansings done for such purposes, other than to get you colon ready for a medical examination. While earlier in the 20th Century, the use of colon cleansing was widespread by mainstream doctors, but this procedure has since fallen out of favor. Here is the argument that doctors now use against colon cleansing. First off, the thought that colon cleansing is the only way to eliminate waste is not true. The colon doesn’t need special pills or enemas to flush itself out. That’s what it is made to do naturally. Secondly, doctors say that colon cleansing can be dangerous, especially when it is done excessively. It is up to your colon to keep you body’s electrolytes in balance. When someone cleanses their colon too often, that electrolyte balance can be knocked out of whack, which can cause dehydration and salt depletion. Continued excessive cleansing can lead to anemia, malnutrition or heart failure. As far as the toxins go, many doctors say there is just no such thing. “Colon cleansing is really a strange fad,” Ruth Kava, PhD, RD, director of nutrition at the American Council on Science and Health in New York City told the web site, WebMD. “The body can cleanse itself quite well. The kidneys and lungs remove toxins and by-products from the blood stream, and regular bowel movements remove any waste products from the gastrointestinal [GI] tract." Another doctor, David L. Diehl, MD told the same site that "High colonics are often touted as a way to cleanse the colon of 'adherent stool' that has been there for years or even decades.” He went on to explain that “the problem with this concept is that there is no such thing. The body does a good job of eliminating stool, and there are no 'pockets' in the colon that collect stool for years. I do a colonoscopy every day of the week, and a pre-procedure purge is sufficient to clean out the stool and leave a pristine looking colon." Again, that just what these doctors say. The huge problem with the arguments of these doctors is that it’s true, the colon does exist to safely discard any toxins and waste the body produces. There’s just one little problem, it doesn’t do it for most people! Why? Because most people eat a contemporary western diet which includes processed, artificially flavored, artificially colored, greasy, nutrient dead junk foods which are foreign to the body and don’t process correctly in the body. The poisons and pollutants in the water people drink, the chemical based products people use on their skin, the food we eat, and even the air we breathe all poison the body. And if you happen to drink alcohol or smoke, add 20 times to the poison to the last sentence! All of these components cause the body to have a really hard time keeping itself clean. It’s true that the body will work properly if it receives all the vital nutrients that in needs on a daily basis. But the problem is that the diet program that getting all of these vital nutrients entails looks to most people like something aliens in Mars eat! And even still, the pollutants that are in virtually everything around us cause the body to have a difficult time staying in optimal condition. So I find it kind of weird how blind these doctors seem to be. The same patients that come to them everyday complaining of chronic constipation they prescribe drugs and surgical procedures to. If the body works so well by itself, why do doctors prescribe medications after every single appointment? All natural, herbal colon cleansing is not a new fad, it has been used for ages and still is. It’s only the wisdom of American medicine that looks to create chemical based drugs that basically do the same things that whole foods, herbs, and holistic exercises do, except their drugs usually come with a laundry list of negative side effects and cause dependency! Whichever side you believe in this argument, it is safe to say that colon cleansing has become a popular trend in medicine and there are many people who are happy with its results. All you need to do is take a look on the internet and see the many products that are available and some of the many people who post their own stories on the web, with photos, explaining how much colon cleansing and colon cleansers have helped them on the way to better health.
