A Guide to Manchester's GMEX Exhibition Venue

By: Catherine Gliddon

Formerly on Lower Mosley Street, Manchester, there was once a train station - not any longer- as it now stands tall as the G-MEX Exhibition Centre. After shutting up shop in 1969, the grand old building remained derelict for many years till it was given a new lease of life by the Greater Manchester Council, and opened as the G-MEX Exhibition Centre in 1986.

Later on, there was an addition to the centre, the Manchester International Convention Centre (MICC), which was an auditorium which could seat only 804 people. The name G-MEX was originally coined as a condensed version of Greater Manchester Exhibition Centre. Recently however, after the Manchester City Council acquired both the G-MEX and its adjunct the MICC, the name was restored to reflect the history of the place - Manchester Central.

The venue is a versatile space, allowing event organisers to reallocate the 10,350 square meter area. The smaller configuration works out to 7,500 and 2,800 for the Central and Windsor Halls respectively. The MICC has an additional space of 2,000 square meters, allowing it to easily be integrated with the main hall, or used entirely separately.

Upcoming events include the Blue Planet Live, Special Education Day and many property and business related shows. However, the Special Education Day is a private event, open to teachers and students of the area only. Subsequently there are trade exhibitions such as Parkex International, RSVP North 2008, HR Solutions and Employee Benefits 2008, and the British Dental Association Conference and Exhibition 2008.
The venue has many parking options available, and in case of an overflow, there are a range of external car parks. This is a good option if traveling by road as the venue is extremely central to the city, as evidenced by its very name, and can be reached from any side.

If one does not want to take a risk with parking, there is always train travel or air travel for that matter. There are 4 train stations which are located within walking distances of the venue. The venue is also on the grid as far as the Metrolink is concerned, and alighting at St. Peter's square will ensure your arrival at the venue. The Manchester airport is a 25-minute drive and also has constant trains servicing the route.

Accommodation is not a problem with many options available in the immediate vicinity. If there is a budget constraint, there is always the option of living in the city, and commuting the short distance to the centre. And this is all possible because of the excellent accessibility of the exhibition centre.
